Over the last few days I have been very proud to lead the UK delegation of 11 parliamentarians and other young leaders to the 5th annual UK-China Young Leaders Roundtable. This is a two day annual event organised by the Great Britain China Centre (GBCC) for younger politicians from both sides, organised in partnership with the youth wing of China’s ruling party – the Communist Youth League – which is used by Beijing as a training ground for future leaders.
The 22 strong Chinese delegation was headed up by Vice President of All-China Youth Federation (ACYF) Zhou Changkui.
We were also joined by Vice Premier Liu Yandong, who is the highest-ranking woman in the Chinese government. The Vice Premier has been visiting the UK to take part in the People to People Dialogue (P2P), one of the UK’s key ministerial-level talks with China. She took time out of her busy schedule to attend the Young Leaders Roundtable at the IoD this morning.
I was thrilled to hear that the Vice Premier had read my book “Turning to Face the East: How Britain can prosper in the Asian Century” she gave it a ringing endorsement, see below, and I was delighted to offer her a copy!
“I know that in 2014, the Head of the UK Delegation to the Young Leaders Roundtable … Mr Liam Byrne MP published his book “Turning to Face the East – How Britain can Prosper in the Asian Century”, which presents forward-thinking reflections on promoting the healthy development of Sino-British relations, and puts forward constructive suggestions, with wide reaching impact for British society.”
